DIY Coloring Book

Make your own coloring book out of images you like. Enjoy making your own kind of art!

While looking for adult coloring book online, I was surprised at how expensive and selective coloring pages are. So, I found this cool website where you can turn a photo into a black and white outlined image using Pixlr, so you can color whatever you like and make your own coloring book.

I wanted to give you the link directly but I could not do so. So, I outlined the steps myself in a video below.

If you watch the video and follow the steps you would get a coloring page. If you do that multiple times and bind them, you get coloring book of your own! It will be a great hobby or a class project for kids.

Outline of Steps

  1. google pixlr and open Pixlr E
  2. open image you would like to turn into coloring page
  3. Under Adjustment tab, select desaturate. It will turn image into black/white.
  4. Under Layer tab, select duplicate a layer.
  5. Use/select background copy.
  6. Under adjustment tab, select Invert.
  7. Click … tab or setting, under the image. under blend mode, select color dodge.
  8. Under filter tab, go to details and choose Gaussian blur.
  9. Adjust the amount of blur depending on how much detail you want to see.
  10. Click… tab or setting, under the image. Select merge down icon
  11. Done! save and print.

Jane’s Coloring Pages

Those are some of my examples that I finished or currently working on. The butterfly is applied version of coloring page, where you can do two coloring pages and put them together in a card form, so that it pops up! In case you are wondering, the place that the sunglass-wearing girl is smiling is Stockholm, Sweden. The one I am currently on is the girl on rose wall. If you continue, you would get a wonderful book with memories of your hard work.

Materials

  • Color pencils
  • Jet printer
  • A4 letter paper
  • Computer

Coloring pencil I used is Arteza 72, which you can get from amazon very easily and it costed me around 60 dollars. I think Arteza is good enough for beginner, and for hobby purposes. You need a jet printer to print it. I used HP printer I already had at home, and it was okey quality. Or if you don’t want to buy a printer, you can use UPS to print them. You need a USB, put images on a file, tell an agent to print the files for you. Ask UPS for details on price. I don’t think it costed too much about 0.25cent /per black and white page?

You can choose thicker paper but I think A4 letter is good for coloring because thicker the paper, less detail you will able to put on. Pixlr is totally free and it does not require you to download it even, so it is very convenient to use. Just google it every time.

Summary

Personally, I think this is very enjoyable and calming exercise to help you focus in the long run. It helps you to be more detail oriented, because you need to be careful and planning to color in detail. Try it yourself!, and see your life changing.

Thank You.
